Tryouts 2014 - 100's Show Up
MARCH 29, 2014 - It was an incredible day at the Orem Youth Baseball fields as 100's showed up for their opportunity to impress the coaches and get drafted to a team. It was incredible for over 100 players from each division line up for their turn to field and hit.
UMPIRING - At 2 PM we had the first umpire training clinic geared towards welcoming those who were desiring to participate as an umpire this year.
A quick count revealed over 50 people show up for the clinic, of which about 10 were over 18 and the rest were under 18. It will be interesting to see who will still be involved come the final mid-June tournaments. So what makes a good umpire? I feel it is a person who is willing to be attentive and constantly willing to learn. Each game, each inning, and each pitch gives the opportunity to learn and/or display that you know how to rule on what has just happened. Good umpires make it all look easy, and that is why some have showed up for the clinic; they think umpiring will be an easy way to make some extra money. Those of us with some experience under our belts know that it is an art form and requires one's full attention and devotion to the craft.
ENCOURAGEMENT - We invite all of those interested to get their gear together, get their uniform together, get copies of the rule books, and dig into the rules and the scenarios. Anybody reading this blog entry has already taken a huge leap forward because they have registered for this site and that shows me they want to learn more... So give yourself a huge pat on the back if you are reading this message. Remember, the last thing we need is another disinterested umpire that is just trying to get the game over with. Instead, we want the finest individuals attempting to learn the rules and perfect their skills on the field. Yes, we want the best. I want partners on the field who have my back as I have theirs. After all, when there are two umpires on the field working together as a team, then there are very few issues that ever get out of hand. But this takes two people who are striving to learn, striving to improve, and striving to be the best umpires they can be. We encourage all of those willing to devote their time and energy to come out and work the fields with us.
